Product Launches: 5 Simple Rules of Skincare Labels
Get your skincare labels right and stay compliant from day one.
If you're planning to launch a skincare product in the UK or EU, your label is more than just design: it’s a legal requirement.
Mislabelled products can lead to fines, product recalls, and damage to your brand reputation. Here’s a quick checklist of five essential labelling rules every skincare brand should follow:
1. Use INCI Names for Ingredients
Your label must list all ingredients using their International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI). This ensures consistency across borders and helps customers avoid allergens.
Tip: Even natural ingredients must be listed using their official INCI name — not just “rose oil” or “vitamin E.”
2. Add the Responsible Person’s Name and Address
Every cosmetic product must include the name and address of the Responsible Person (RP) — the legal entity accountable for the product.
Tip: This must be a UK-based address if you’re selling in the UK.
3. Include a Batch Number
A batch or lot number helps you trace your product in case of a recall or issue. It’s essential for safety, GMP, and regulatory inspections.
Tip: Keep batch records in your Product Information File (PIF).
4. Display a Best Before or PAO Symbol
You must include either:
A Best Before Date if your product expires in under 30 months, or
A Period After Opening (PAO) symbol (an open jar icon with a number like “6M” or “12M”) if it lasts longer
Tip: This helps customers know how long they can safely use the product.
5. State Precautions and Usage Instructions
If your product has any specific safety instructions or usage limitations, these must be clearly shown on the label (e.g. “For external use only” or “Avoid contact with eyes”).
⚠️ Missing warnings can lead to claims of negligence if adverse effects occur.
